Our first assignment is to comment on the following quote in no more than 5 lines. (and by comment I mean you say who said the quote, when and why, and why you think it is important):
"If the man be a shadow of his Master this is the Temple of Dissipation indeed!"
I am the first comment!! :D :D
ReplyDeleteThe previous quote was said by Sir Oliver in his first visit to Charles' house, while incognito as Premium, a broker.Trip's way of talking to him, and the way he wanted to gain money his own way were a reflection to Oliver of how Charles would be.And so, to him, that place was a place of immorality based on what he saw from Trip.Which reflects on the theme of appearance Vs. reality, as though Oliver thinks Charles immoral and unfaithful, he discovers later on that he was deceived by the actions of Charles, and that Charles is actually a loyal, and good person, although first impressions of him say the contrary.
ReplyDeleteThis quotation is said by “Sir Oliver” to himself about “Trip”; Charles’ servant .He says this quotation after noticing that “Trip” is also asking for money from. He says this quotation because Charles is known to be a borrower and that he is always in debt, and since the master is a borrower, this means that it will be okay for the servant to ask for money. The quotation helps revealing something about Charles’ character. He is extravagant and always in need for money and it shows that the servant always knows how to learn from his master.

ReplyDeleteMy answer looks as if I have just been electrocuted by a blender, then on my way to the blog a white rhino fell on my head, followed by tripping over in a hole in the ground.I just wrote an answer relevant to a person with a brain concussion!! :D

ReplyDeleteThis quotation is said by sir Oliver Surface when he goes to his nephew's house,Charles's, pretending to be a broker called Mr.Premium. He creats this character in order to find out the truth about the rumours concerning Charles and to evaluate him by his own judgement. He says so when he sees Charles's servant, Trip, such an extravagant person. This quotation is important because a servant is somehow a minimized copy of his master. Thus, with a servant as extravagant as Trip, one can only imagen how far the extravagance of Charles might go, and there is no way he shouldn't be in debt all the time
Dear Professor and colleagues,
ReplyDeleteIf you do have a comment on my "comment", PLEASE DON'T hesitate to tell me.Thanks :-)

ReplyDeleteThis quotation is said by Sir Oliver commenting on Trip's behaviors as he imitates his master Charles in his extravagance and need for money. This quotation is a satirical treatment of the hypocrisy and extravagance in the society which Sheriden introduces in his comedy of manners play ,The School for a Scandal .
ReplyDeleteDr Amal what should I do about school foe scandal should i write an account about characters?
ReplyDeleteThis quote is said by Sir Oliver during his first visit to his nephew;Charles Surface.
ReplyDeleteSir Oliver said these words as he noticed that Trip-Charles' servant-seeks for money ,and so he is an extravagance. Sir Oliver thought that if the servant looks like that, so his master must be like him.
Sir Oliver misunderstood his nephew, and he prejudged him without being sure.
I think that it is important because one mustn't judge by surrounded circumstances. He can judge only if he sees by his own eyes.
This quotation is said by Sir Oliver to himself while he was in Charles surface’s house. He is talking about Trip. Trip is so extravagant and asking for money. Sir Oliver means that if the servant looks like his master so this place is a temple of dissipation.
ReplyDeleteIt is important because on should not judge people he did not know.
This quotation is said by sir Oliver in Charles surface house, when he goes to see Charles character and his extravagance. This is on Trip,Charles' servant, who is also extravagant in taking money.Sir Oliver means here that if a servant is like his master so it will be a place of dissipation. But this is strange as sir Oliver is not used to judge people by appearance.
ReplyDeleteThis quotation is said by Sir Oliver in Charles surface's house.Sir Oliver goes to Charles and he pretends to be Mr.premium.As he likes to make his own judgement by himself. In this quotation, the man, here, refers to Trip and the master refers to Charles.Sir Oliver wants to say that If the man or the servant is like his master,It will be a place of dissipation. As Trip asks for alot of money and he seems to be extravagant like his master,Charles.
ReplyDeletethis quotation is said by sir oliver to himself on his visit to his nephew's house; Charles's
ReplyDeletehouse.he said it because he found that trip is not a good person as he is an extravagant one.sir oliver thought that if the servant looks like this so his master; Charles will be worse.this quote is important because one should not judge the others by judging those around them as every one has his own character
This qoutation is said by sir Oliver when sir oliver frst visit Charles at the house of charles late father as mr premium . A servant , Trip greets them . Charles, meanwhile , is in another room drinking and singing with his friend .While sir Oliver waits for charles to receive him ,Trip tries to borrow twenty pounds from Moses. Sir Oliver remarks to Moses this qoutation . Sir Oliver tries to know the truth about Charles .Sir Oliver do not convince what is said about Charles that he is bad man. This quote reavles theme appearance versus reality.
ReplyDeleteThese words were said by Sir Oliver when he was at Charles' house talking to his servant"Trip" as Mr.Premium. Trip's way of talking, asking for money, makes Sir Oliver utter these words.Sir Oliver was wondering that Trip is nothing but the shadow of his master Charles, they both love money, are slaves to it and ask for it. The reference to "the Temple of dissipation" is important especially in the presence of Moses as it has religious implications.
ReplyDeleteThis quotation is said by Sir Oliver to himself while visiting Charles and pretending to be a broker in order to find the truth about him .The quotation is commenting on the behavior of Charles' servant Trip who wants to mortgage his master's clothes to get money . Hence, Sir Oliver's first impression of Charles is that he – like his servant- is a slave for money . Still, Sir Oliver does not judge the book by its cover and waits before he formulates an opinion about Charles. The thing that proves Sir Oliver is a witty man who has a lot of experience .
ReplyDeleteThis quote is said by Sir Oliver , while he was in Charles' house disguised as Mr. Premium . This quotation was a comment on Trip's behavior when he asks Moses to help him raising money " by a way of annuity". So here Sir Oliver observes that Trip looks exactly like what he has been told Charles to be. I think this quotation is important because Sir oliver has formed an idea about who Charles is from Trip's behavior , as he hasn't meet Charles yet.
ReplyDeletehope that my answer makes any sense :S:D
ReplyDeletethis quote is said by Sir Oliver in act 3 scene 2.
ReplyDeleteIn this scene sir oliver visits the house of his nephew charles as Mr. premium to reveal the real character of charles by himself. there sir oliver meets chales's sevant Trip who tries toborrow twenty pounds from Moses. Then sir oliver wonders if the servant is in this way , how the master then will be as certainly the servant is a fellower and " shadow" to his master.
nesma your comment is really great
ReplyDeleteThis quotation is said by sir Oliver. While Oliver is waiting for Charles to receive him and Moses,Trip tries to borrow twenty pounds from Moses so he remarks to Moses by saying this quotation. One can say that this quote is important because Sheridan uses the word "Temple" and not saying a house or even a source as it has a religious connotation since Moses is a Jew.
ReplyDeleteNourhan and Mennah said a very important note about sir Oliver's judging skills. Omnia, I wish you could clarify what u meant. Sara, Heba Yasmeen and Nesma provided great comments. Noony 75 please write your real name. Rest of comments: superb! thanks girls.
ReplyDeletethese words are said by sir oliver in an aside talk after his conversation with trip charles' servant, he said these words about him as he meant that the servant is like his master as charles has the reputation of being a borrower of money and trip makes alot of tricks in order to gain money from sir oliver ,,so he said these words that trip is like charles...
ReplyDeletebtw my name is basma this is not my name in the nick name :D thank you
This quotation is said by Sir Oliver when he first visit his nephew's house, Charles. Sheridan makes use of this quotation as a satire of the extravagant society he lives in where the servant imitates his master in every thing whether serious or trivial. The importance of this quotation comes from Sir Oliver's sage to test his nephews and Know who is real and who is not.
